When you log in, you'll see in the top right corner
"Hey, you, you have X messages, X are new."
Private messaging gives us a way to communicate with other members without giving out email information. You can, however, set up your preferences to get email notifications of 'PMs' if you so wish.
Further, you can set it up to give pop-up notifications of PMs. So if you're on the forum at the same time as someone else, perhaps having a public discussion, and you wish to say something private, you can send a PM. If they get pop-ups, you know they'll read the message faster than they'll get to their email account.
